Custom

These private homes have been designed with specific clients in mind.

Modularean Eco House
Both playful artpiece and artful playpiece, the Modularean Eco House is a sturdy, sustainable custom dollhouse designed by David Baker and built by woodworker Julianna Sassaman.

310 Waverly Residence
An urban insertion in the suburban grid, this steel and stone home becomes progressively private as the rooms move toward the West.

SHIFT
David Baker's home and studio: upSHIFT's modest quarters flank a sun-filled great room that extends onto a glass deck; dnSHIFT houses a private apartment and an art space that opens to the street.

Redstone Cabin
A cozy update of an old fishing cabin in Redstone, the Ruby of the Rockies.

Kayo House
The catwalk leading to this house distances it literally and metaphorically from the street and the ground below. Rooms extend on cantilevers, creating a tree house-like sensation.

Revenge of the Stuccoids
Inspired by "Day of the Triffids", this house recounts the march of the "Stuccoids," the stucco bungalows of the flatlands, up into the Berkeley Hills to battle the "Maybecks," the eclectic wood-clad houses designed by Bernard Ralph Maybeck in the early 1900s.

Post Earthquake House
A normal house just like its neighbors...but in this age of pre-cooked dinners and pre-recorded TV, this is a house that has been pre-shaken and pre-crushed.

Lunar Lander Chalet
The Lunar Lander Chalet was destroyed in the October 20, 1991, in Oakland-Berkeley Hills Firestorm. The house featured a slate-tiled solarium with a sliding glass roof.

Bow Tie House
This five-bedroom home climbs the hillside by half-steps under a swooping winged roof.

Sweet Residence
Designed for a dealer in Zen art, this small house--formed from a half-pyramid perched atop a half-cube--includes a formal tea ceremony room.

Spaghetti House
David Baker's M-Arch thesis project realized: Spaghetti House takes its name from its long, skinny footprint.
