Mid-Peninsula Housing, a nonprofit developer, proposed an affordable housing development on a six acre open infill site adjacent to the Sisters of the Holy Family Mother House. The site is only one block from the Mission San Jose, one of the original Spanish missions founded in 1797. The project includes 41 units of senior housing and 60 family apartments.
The site is organized as an orthogonal street grid to give a community, rather than project feeling. Parking for residents and guests is arranged along this street grid. Community recreation facilities include a community building, tot lot, and several open play areas. A network of pathways winds through the site.
The family townhouses are grouped in two, four and eight unit buildings in order to maximize landscaped open space. Townhouses are personalized by using individualized entries, trellises and entry patios, and by varying the elevations and roof lines. The townhouses vary in size from one to four bedrooms.
The one bedroom apartments for seniors are grouped into a two and three story L-shaped building around a courtyard garden providing a safe shared environment. Seniors have use of individual balconies with trellises which overlook the street or garden, and share laundry and community rooms.
