Northwest perspective.

This high-density design brings more than 70,000 square feet of affordable housing to West Oakland without sacrificing neighborhood scale. The local community informed the design throughout, and entrances, porches, and courtyards, connect the project with the surrounding streets.

Community involvement occurred throughout the design and construction process. We held multiple community meetings during each stage of design, with brainstorming sessions, community liaisons, and direct feedback from neighbors and residents.

Elevation.

Community building and balconypromenade encourage outdoor use.

Relationships were maintained with all pre-existing residents to ensure active participation in the design and offer first placement in the new project.

Playground is surrounded by laundry, community room and office for increased security.

Pathways.

This project brings 79 new units of affordable rental housing to West Oakland. This acre-and-a-half site accommodates over 70,000 square feet of living space, including a three-story apartment building, 16 three-story townhouses, as well as a community room, office, laundry, and computer facility. The townhouses offer 3- and 5-bedroom units, the apartment building offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom units—all served by an elevator—and a partially sunken concrete parking structure.

All units access multiple courtyards that bring light, air, and a place for community interaction to the center of the building, and street-side entrances that connect to and enliven the surrounding neighborhood.
